The author's original typed copy with tipped-in or loosely inserted illustrations, with his MS corrections. On the cover he has printed "Berlin".. - It is the history of the German capital focusing on the period from 1640 through the 1950s. Contrasts the Imperial Prussian military tradition (the Eagle) with the good natured, humorous side (the Bear). Chapters on the Biedermeier period, Christopher Isherwood's gay and tragic Berlin of the 1920s, the rise and rule of the Nazis, and much more. This appears to be an early draft with the intended chapters loosely structured on the first page. There were seven originally planned with chronological development mirroring the 1740-1940 period. Chapter titles were quite innovative with the Eagle and Bear analogies commonly used as well as others. The manuscript corrections are extensive but the real feature of this draft is the focus it places on the structuring of the work of obvious and considerable reference value. Scans and additional information on request.
