Ein Arzt wird 1943 wegen kriegswichtiger Forschungsarbeiten von der Gestapo daran gehindert, den Totschlag an seiner Braut zu sühnen, den er im Affekt beging, als er erkannte, dass sie gegen ihn intrigierte und ihn ausspionierte. Da seine Tat von den Machthabern vertuscht wird, leidet er zunehmend unter Zwangsvorstellungen und wird zum triebhaften Mörder, der erst nach Kriegsende seine Schuld "begleichen" kann: Er erschießt den ehemaligen Nazi-Beamten und begeht Selbstmord. Ungeachtet einiger Schwächen in der Verzahnung der Geschichte und der psychopathologischen Zeichnung ein atmosphärisch sehr dicht und quälend eindringlich gestalteter, hervorragend gespielter Film, der in der deutschen Nachkriegsproduktion seinesgleichen sucht und lange Zeit verkannt blieb.
