Fleeing Nazi Germany in 1933, Bruno Taut was barely four weeks in Japan, when he received a contract from the Meiji Shobo publishers to write a book of his impressions. His reputation preceeding him, Taut made several presentations, visited monuments of art and culture, and met all of the important architects of Japanese modernism, discussing with them the problems of modernization and industrialization. As an expert of foreign origin, his opinions were sought. "Nippon mit europäischen Augen gesehen" became a bestseller in Japan overnight; even the 1991 paperback version has gone through seventeen editions to this day.
