Eine der schönsten Poe-Verfilmungen von Roger Corman, nach verschiedenen Erzählungen: "Morella" - Ein englischer Landgraf macht seine Tochter zum Ebenbild der geliebten Gattin, die bei der Geburt starb; aber Morella ersteht aus dem Grab und nimmt die ganze Familie mit sich ins Totenreich. "Die schwarze Katze" - Der Edelmann Fortunato mauert seine Geliebte und deren vertrottelten Ehemann im Keller ein; aber eine neugierige Katze bringt ihn um den Verstand. "Der Fall Waldemar" - Ein Hypnotiseur hält den todkranken Herrn Waldemar wochenlang in der Schwebe zwischen Diesseits und Jenseits, während er die vermeintliche Witwe zu umgarnen versucht; aber Waldemar entwickelt im Koma übersinnliche Kräfte. Corman geht sehr frei mit den Vorlagen um ("Die schwarze Katze" ist kombiniert mit "Das Faß Amontillado"), erreicht aber gerade dadurch eine besondere filmische Qualität. Die Darsteller sind hervorragend; filmgeschichtliche Bedeutung erlangt die Produktion durch die ausgeklügelte Farbdramaturgie. [filmdienst]
