Ein zehnjähriges Mädchen beschuldigt in einer Mischung aus Naivität und Bösartigkeit seine beiden jungen College-Lehrerinnen der lesbischen Liebe. Die Lüge führt nicht nur zum Ruin der Privatschule, sondern zerstört auch das Leben der Lehrerinnen, von denen sich die eine, als sie ein Körnchen Wahrheit in den Anschuldigungen entdeckt, das Leben nimmt. Nach "Infame Lügen" (1936) die zweite Adaption desselben Bühnenstücks durch Wyler. Zwar erreicht Wyler nicht die kritische Schärfe und formale Brillanz seiner Vorkriegsfilme, aber dennoch ist der Film mehr als eine bloße psychologische Studie: im Gegensatz zur ersten Verfilmung wird das Thema direkter und konkreter angegangen, wobei Wyler aufzeigt, wie das Zusammenwirken von individuellen Konflikten mit gesellschaftlichen Vorurteilen eine verheerende Auswirkung haben kann.
