La storia della pittura del Realismo socialista coincide col racconto di uno straordinario movimento artistico del XX secolo. Lo stato sovietico sostenne la pittura realista in una misura ineguagliata nel resto del mondo, promuovendone lo sviluppo attraverso "l'arruolamento" di migliaia di artisti di talento in tutto il territorio di un immenso impero multi-etnico. Il Realismo socialista esaltò il ruolo sociale dell'arte e la superiorità del contenuto sulla forma; incoraggiò il recupero delle pratiche di mestiere tradizionali e attinse alla storia dell'arte europea antica e moderna come ad un serbatoio di motivi stilistici e iconografici da cui trarre ispirazione. Nella storia del XX secolo, esso ha rappresentato l'unica compiuta alternativa al desiderio di fare tabula rasa del passato caratteristici del movimento moderno. Realismi socialisti: grande pittura sovietica 1920-1970 è la più completa rassegna di questo movimento mai presentata fuori della Russia
