"Der Erste Weltkrieg [...] war der erste Film- und Medienkrieg der Geschichte. [...] Im Völkergemetzel des "Großen Kriegs" kam dem neuen Medium Film - auch in den Augen der Militärs - eine überragende propagandistische Bedeutung zu. [...] Mit enormem Aufwand wurden "Feldkinos" zum Teil an die vordersten Kampflinien transferiert. Dabei hatten alle Filmberichterstatter, egal auf welcher Seite sie im Einsatz waren, mit denselben Problemen zu kämpfen: Die Kameras waren sperrig und unbeweglich, das Filmmaterial wenig lichtempfindlich, die Produktion authentischer Kampfbilder erwies sich als schwierig. Und so wurden "Kampfaufnahmen" in der Regel im Zuge von Manövern gedreht oder mit uniformierten Statisten reinszeniert. Heute geht man davon aus, dass maximal 20 Prozent des Filmmaterials aus dem Ersten Weltkrieg tatsächliche Kriegshandlungen zeigt. Der Rest ist gefälscht. Die Dokumentation "Krieg der Bilder" zeigt neues, im deutschsprachigen Raum größtenteils noch nicht veröffentlichtes Filmmaterial aus dem "Filmarchiv Austria" sowie aus deutschen, dänischen, italienischen, norwegischen, russischen, serbischen und ungarischen Archiven."
