Die alljährliche Jagd auf Schloss Vogelöd fällt strömendem Regen zum Opfer, so dass sich die Anwesenden gezwungermaßen im Schloss aufhalten. Die schnell aufkommende Langeweile findet ein Ende, als der Besuch eines Grafen angekündigt wird, der ein Jahr zuvor seinen Bruder erschossen haben soll. Sein Auftauchen führt zu Reibereien mit der Witwe des Toten, die mit ihrem neuen Ehemann auf dem Schloss weilt. Ein mysteriöser Verwandter des Toten sorgt für zusätzliche Verstörung. Frühe Regiearbeit Friedrich Wilhelm Murnaus, der den trivialen Stoff geschickt nutzt, um eine Atmosphäre von Angst und Verunsicherung im Grenzbereich von Wirklichem und Unwirklichem zu erzeugen. Für die 2002 restaurierte Fassung des Films komponierte der Brite Neil Brand eine neue Musik. [film-dienst]
