Die Entwicklung ressourcensparender, umweltschonender Verfahren im Sinne einer "nachhaltigen" (sustainable) Landnutzung rückt derzeit weltweit wieder in den Mittelpunkt des wirtschaftlichen und wissenschaftlichen Interesses. Dieses Ziel erfordert unter anderem eine effektive pflanzliche Stoffverwertung unter größtmöglicher Nutzung biologischer Aneignungsmechanismen. Voraussetzung dafür sind bessere Kenntnisse über die kausalen naturwissenschaftlichen Zusammenhänge im System Pflanze - Boden. Das 8. Borkheider Seminar zur Ökophysiologie des Wurzelraums, das vom 22. - 24.9. 1997 in Schmerwitz (Brandenburg) stattfand, befaßte sich mit dieser Problematik. Im vorliegenden Band werden in interdisziplinären Originalbeiträgen die Beziehungen zwischen Wurzelleistung, Wurzelexsudation, Mikrobentätigkeit und Nährstoffaufnahme unter dem Aspekt einer effektiven Pflanzenernährung durch bessere Erschließung der Nährstoffvorräte des Bodens behandelt
