Dieser Abschnitt behandelt ausschließlich die Bildung und Spaltung der Sauerstoffbrücken in den Äthern, Acetalen, Glykosiden und Polysacchariden, Estern, Ortho-estern, Säureanhydriden, sowie in den cyclischen Äthern und Lac tonen, während alle anderen zu dieE:~en Verbindungen führenden Reaktionen, bei denen Änderungen des Kohlenstoffgerüstes oder der Oxydationsstufe eintreten, in den entsprechenden Abschnitten dieses Handbuches angeführt sind. Die in Frage kommenden Reaktionen werden meistens katalytisch beschleunigt, da die einfachen Grundreaktionen im allgemeinen zu träge verlaufen.

Bei weitem am wichtigsten sind die Säure- und Basenkatalyse, die bei der nahen Verwandtschaft der ganzen Verbindungsklasse sowohl für die Bildungs-, als auch für die Spaltungs reaktionen, die ja nur die entgegengesetzten Richtungen ein und derselben Reaktion darstellen, nahezu universell anwendbar sind
