Note:
"The preceding poem [i.e., The Pains of memory] was principally wrote prior to the author's having seen Mr. Merry's on the same subject, and was occasioned, like his own, by a perusal of Mr. Rodger's [i.e., Samuel Rogers'] Pleasures of memory. Since it was intended for publication in one of our modern periodical works, where it has appeared, it has undergone some alterations, and a few additions have been made."--p. [26]. - An earlier edition ("The pains of memory: with some other poems," New York, 1807; 76 p.) is attributed to William Gilmer by Shaw & Shoemaker (entry 12662). The source for the attribution is not known. Except for the additional material following p. 76, this work is textually the same. - Last page blank. - Shaw & Shoemaker, 15832. - Title sometimes incorrectly transcribed as: The Pains of memory, and the flowers of fancy
