Die zeitgenössische Kunstproduktion aus arabischen Ländern ist noch immer ein weitgehend unbearbeitetes Feld. Nicht selten wird mit allgemeinen wohlfeilen Thesen zwischen Ost und West, arabisch-islamischer und abendländisch-christlicher Zivilisation unterschieden, ohne damit im Kern den spezifischen Eigenheiten angemessen zu begegnen. Im Bewusstsein, dass die Rezeption von Kunst aus diesen Ländern nach einem neuen Umgang verlangt, hat das Marta in Herford neun Künstlerinnen aus Libyen, Tunesien, Algerien, dem Libanon, Jordanien, Iran und Irak eingeladen. Sie alle sind zum Studium oder als Exilanten in den Westen gekommen und größtenteils nicht wieder in ihre Heimat zurückgekehrt. Die Ausstellung stellt die Kunstwerke in den Mittelpunkt und gibt den biographischen und nationalen Besonderheiten im Leben der Frauen ausreichend Raum. Durch die Vielstimmigkeit ihrer Ausdrucksweisen werden viele Aspekte miteinander in Beziehung gesetzt, die Grenzen und Grenzüberschreitungen, aber auch Zeiten des Umbruchs in den jeweiligen Ländern reflektieren.
