"[...] Die Serie wurde vielfach als "Hollywood"-Produktion bezeichnet - produziert wurde sie allerdings von einer New Yorker Firma und gedreht wurde ausschließlich an Originalschauplätzen in Deutschland und Österreich - auch im KZ Mauthausen, einschließlich Hakenkreuz-Flaggen. Der Regisseur Marvin J. Chomsky, der Produzent Robert Berger, Schauspielerinnen und Schauspieler erinnern sich an die besondere, oft beklemmende Atmosphäre der Dreharbeiten, an Begegnungen mit der historischen Wirklichkeit hinter der Fiktion, über die sie später kaum jemals wieder gesprochen haben. Der ehemalige WDR-Fernsehspielchef Günter Rohrbach, der die Serie nach Deutschland brachte, schildert die ungewöhnlich scharfe Debatte im Vorfeld. Es war eine aufgeladene Situation, mit Drohungen und Schmähungen von Rechts und Links und zahlreichen Versuchen, die Ausstrahlung zu verhindern. Die Reaktionen der Zuschauer übertrafen dann alle Erwartungen und fast jeder, der damals "Holocaust" gesehen hat, kann sich heute noch daran erinnern, was das mit ihm oder ihr gemacht hat."
