"1936 wurde die Aufführung von Hindemiths Musik in Deutschland offiziell verboten. Der Höhepunkt der Diffamierung war die Präsentation seines Werks im Rahmen der Düsseldorfer Ausstellung Entartete Kunst 1938. Zwei Jahre später emigrierte Paul Hindemith in die USA. Im Auftrag des New York Collegiate Choral komponierte er 1946 ein Requiem auf den Tod von Präsident Roosevelt. Als Textvorlage diente nicht die Lithurgie der lateinischen Totenmesse, sondern Verse des amerikanischen Lyrikers Walt Whitman. Der hatte sein Poem "Als Flieder jüngst mir im Garten blüht' als Reaktion auf die Ermordung von Präsident Lincoln durch einen politischen Fanatiker geschrieben. Hindemith widmete das Werk all "denen, die wir lieben". Entstanden ist ein klingenden Zeugnis der Trauer und universellen Mitgefühls." [mdr.de]
