Um zu Reichtum und Ansehen zu kommen, verkauft Balduin, der beste Fechter von Prag, sein Spiegelbild an einen geheimnisvollen Fremden. Das angenehme Leben endet jedoch in der unheilvollen Flucht vor dem anderen Ich und schließlich im Tod. Klassischer Stummfilm; er verarbeitet romantische Motive aus den Werken von E.T.A. Hoffmann, Chamisso und E.A. Poe zu einer düsteren Doppelgängergeschichte, die von dem Dänen Stellan Rye (1880-1914) als virtuoses Licht- und Schattenspiel inszeniert wurde. Einer der ersten deutschen Filme, der konsequent die vielfältigen optischen Möglichkeiten des Mediums nutzte und in den Dienst eines atmosphärischen Gesamteindrucks stellte.
