Ein Metzgerssohn aus Schwaben wandert nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg in die USA aus, wo er dank des familieneigenen Wurstrezepts Fuß fasst und mit anderen Emigranten einen Gesangsverein gründet. Zudem stellt er eine aus Hamburg emigrierte Zirkusartistin als Assistentin seiner Gattin in der Metzgerei ein, erzeugt damit aber eine schwierige Konstellation mit den beiden in ihn verliebten Frauen. Gediegen entfaltetes, ausgezeichnet fotografiertes Auswanderer-Epos, das auf melodramatische Kunstgriffe verzichtet und sensibel Verlust und Fremdheitserfahrungen thematisiert.
