As service requirements of applications grow continuously, the term Quality of Service (QoS), denoting the performance provided by a network, more and more comes into the focus of interest. There are several approaches for offering QoS in networks. Two of them, the ATM protocol and the Differentiated Services approach are presented here. In the ATM protocol, several QoS and traffic management functionalities are implemented. The Differentiated Services architecture is a scalable approach to extend the IP protocol by introducing service classes with different performance characteristics. These two approaches will be compared theoretically as well as by presenting real-life measurements.
