In dem Beitrag werden zwei ältere, bislang unentdeckte Mythenversionen rekonstruiert, in denen die ,barbarischen‘ Amazonen als Einwanderinnen, Ahnfrauen und Gründungsheroinen in positiver Konnotation vorgeführt werden. Im Zentrum steht zum einen die am Ende des 6. Jh. v. Chr. beliebte Erzählung von Theseus und Antiope, die mit alten Kultmalen in Athen in Verbindung gebracht werden kann. Zum anderen sind Ergebnisse neuerer Grabungen im Artemisheiligtum von Ephesos zu nennen, wo Befunde aus der früharchaischen Zeit (7. Jh. v. Chr.) ebenfalls Anlass für die Entstehung einer älteren Gründungslegende geliefert haben könnten. Ihre Funktion als identitätsstiftende Migrationsmythen wurde während des 5. Jh. v. Chr. unter Einfluss der Perserkriege und der daraus resultierenden hegemonialen Interessen Athens aufgegeben und von der Dualität zwischen Griechen und Barbaren überlagert. Dies gelang deshalb so gut, weil die alten Raumbezüge nun nicht mehr präsent waren.

This paper reconstructs two old, previously undiscovered versions of myths that represent the ‘barbaric’ Amazons in a positive light as immigrants, female ancestors and founding heroines. The paper focuses on the tale of Theseus and Antiope – an especially popular narrative at the end of the 6th c. BC that can be connected with very old cult monuments in Athens. In Ephesos findings from recent excavations in the Temple of Artemis coming from the Early Archaic Period (7th c. BC) may likewise have provided reasons for the emergence of an older foundation legend there as well. During the 5th c. BC, under the influence of the Persian wars and of Athens’ subsequent hegemonic interests these stories lost their function as migration myths serving to establish identity and were eclipsed by the duality between Greeks and Barbarians. This process was so successful because the old spatial references were no longer present.
