Nathalie Sarraute zufolge werden in der Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts die konventionellen Romanfiguren durch die neue Hauptfigur des Ich ihrer autonomen Existenz beraubt. Samuel Beckett hat die Anregung für seine Gestaltung des neuen Phänotyps in einer Nebenfigur des Romans "Auf der Suche nach der verlorenen Zeit" gefunden. Das Reden-Müssen unter dem Druck der angesammelten Zeit und die körperliche Bewegungslosigkeit teilen Becketts Ich-Erzähler mit Prousts Tante Léonie. Die körperliche Bewegungslosigkeit erscheint ihnen als Idealzustand, und sie verfügen über einen großen Schatz an Erinnerungen, ohne an dessen Wert zu glauben.
