In den Museen der DDR konnten die Besucher bisher nur einzelne Werke von Werner Heldt sehen. Obwohl er inmitten des historischen Stadtkerns von Berlin zwischen Parochialkirche und Nikolaikirche aufwuchs und später auch längere Zeit hier lebte und arbeitete, ist selbst in den Museen im Ostteil der Stadt wenig von ihm präsent. Das hängt wohl kaum mit dem Rang des Werkes zusammen, sondern vielmehr mit der deutschen und Berliner Geschichte vor und nach 1945, die seine Präsenz in den öffentlichen Sammlungen im Osten Berlins fast völlig verhinderte. Das ist um so tragischer, weil gerade sein Werk in allen Phasen von tiefem Humanismus bestimmt wird. Kaum ein anderer seiner Generation hat wie er Bauliches und Atmosphärisches dieser Stadt so aufgefaßt, daß unverwechselbar Berlinisches aus seinen Bildern spricht: eben jene Mischung von plebejischer Nüchternheit und großstädtischer Poesie. Sicher klingt Heinrich Zilles Sicht vor allem anfangs mit, auch Lesser Urys leuchtende Großstadt bei Nacht, aber die zunehmende Kargheit der Stadtlandschaften Heldts mit ihren kulissenartigen Häuserfronten und -giebeln in immer härterer Helligkeit bringt eine nur ihm eigene Sicht ein, die gleichermaßen Ausdruck dramatischer subjektiver Befindlichkeit wie Zeitgeist reinsten Wassers ist. Das gipfelt in der Gruppe von Arbeiten, die um sein großes Thema "Berlin am Meer" kreisen.
