Die Annales Bertiniani, Vedastini, Xantenses sind die entscheidenden mittel- und westfränkischen Quellen für das 9. Jahrhundert seit 830. Die Annales Bertiniani sind eine Art offiziöser Darstellung der Geschichte vom Standpunkt des Westreiches, die auch für das lotharingische Mittelreich und das Ostfränkische Reich unentbehrlich ist. Die Annalen von St. Vaast führen den Bericht bis 900 fort. Die Annalen von Xanten sind besonders für Lothringen und das Rheingebiet und die Normanneneinfälle des späten 9. Jahrhunderts wichtig. – Der Text der Annales Bertiniani ist gegenüber der bisher maßgebenden Ausgabe wesentlich verbessert, da der Herausgeber eine erst nachträglich bekannt gewordene Pariser Handschrift benutzen konnte.
