Tausende Männer, Frauen und selbst Kinder leisteten während des Zweiten Weltkriegs in den deutschen Forsten Zwangsarbeit. Die Forstverwaltungen waren nicht in der Lage, das für die Kriegswirtschaft deutlich erhöhte Holzeinschlagssoll mit eigenen Kräften zu erfüllen. So kamen bald nach Beginn des Krieges die ersten kriegsgefangenen und zivilen Zwangsarbeiter zum Einsatz. Später wurden ganze Familien aus Osteuropa unter menschenverachtenden Bedingungen nach Deutschland verschleppt. Die Dokumentation dieses wichtigen Kapitels deutscher (Forst-)Geschichte 1933–1945 erfasst mit dem Solling und dem Harz große Teile des heutigen niedersächsischen Staatswaldes. Sie macht sichtbar, in welchem Umfang und unter welch unmenschlichen Lebens- und Arbeitsbedingungen die Zwangsarbeiter im Wald eingesetzt wurden. Die Studie soll Mahnung für die Zukunft sein, dergleichen nie wieder geschehen zu lassen, und sie soll den von Verschleppung, Entrechtung und Demütigung Betroffenen ein Andenken bewahren (Quelle: Verlag).
