Seit 1990 haben wir uns daran gewöhnt, dass es vornehmlich vier Möglichkeiten gibt, deutsche Zeitgeschichte nach 1945 zu schreiben: Erstens die nationalgeschichtliche Perspektive, die von einer gemeinsamen deutschen Geschichte im Zeitalter der Teilung ausgeht; zweitens das kontrastierende Denkmodell, das die Gegensätze von Demokratie und Diktatur herausarbeitet; drittens die Separatgeschichten sowie viertens eine Geschichte der „Verflechtung und Abgrenzung” zwischen der Bundesrepublik und der DDR.
