Harald Schmitt (*1948) ist einer der bekanntesten deutschen Fotografen des späten 20. Jahrhunderts. Nachdem er sich in den 1970er-Jahren vor allem für die Fotoagentur Sven Simon betätigte, war er seit 1977 festangestellter Fotoreporter des Magazins „stern“, für das er bis 1983 in der DDR arbeitete. Danach fotografierte er weltweit für „stern“-Fotoreportagen. Während seiner Laufbahn erhielt er sechs „World Press Photo Awards“. In einem Interview mit zwei Studierenden des Public History-Masters der Freien Universität Berlin am 27. Mai 2014 sprach Harald Schmitt über seine Zeit in Ost-Berlin, seine prägendsten Erlebnisse und den Wandel der Fotografie.
