Note:
Military map of Abyssinia [i.e. Ethiopia] in 1868 produced by the British expedition led by Lieutenant General Robert Napier. The aim of the expedition was to reach the mountain fortress of Magdala under the control of half-mad Emperor Theodore who held 60 European hostages in his dungeons. Napier arrived at Annesley Bay in the Red Sea, shown as the port of Malkatto [i.e. Mulkatto] early in January 1868; reached the city of Magdala, 420 miles from the coast, in April; stormed the stronghold, freed the captives, razed the place to the ground, returned to the coast, and on the 18th June the last man of the expedition had left Africa. Relief is shown by contours and spot heights
