Content:
During his Weimer period, Bach completed organ or harpsichord transcriptions of ten Vivaldi concertos, whose first movements were written in ternary form, with contrasting tutti and solo sections. Bach used this type of structure, with modifications, in his own concertos. Vivaldi's opening movements serve as models for the first movements of the first and second Brandenburg concertos, and for the two fast movements of the fifth Brandenburg concerto. Bach also used Vivaldi's concerto structure in combination with rondo, da-capo, and fugal forms, in the fast movements of several sonatas and in a number of preludes.
