The author discusses the history of the Kurdish languages in Turkey, where any other language beside Turkish remained forbidden, Iran, where at least in theory (and in practice since 1984) local languages were allowed alongside Farsi, and in Iraq, where spoken Kurdish was never suppressed, and a standard written Kurdish, adequate for academic and literary purposes, was allowed to be developed.
