C. Plinius Secundus (23 bis 79 n. Chr.) war Offizier, Staatsmann, der Vertraute römischer Kaiser, Universalgelehrter, Fachschriftsteller und ein eigenwilliger Stilist. Von den zahlreichen Schriften des älteren Plinius sind nur die 37 Bücher seiner "Naturalis Historia" erhalten. Die letzte deutsche Übersetzung des Gesamtwerkes ist mehr als hundert Jahre alt. Die zweisprachige Tusculum-Ausgabe stellt dem lateinischen Text eine moderne Übersetzung mit einem reichhaltigen Sach-Kommentar gegenüber.
