Dieses Kapitel untersucht die Entwicklung des Verständnisses moralischer Verpflichtung und interpersonaler Verantwortung im Zusammenhang unterschiedlicher Kulturen. Freundschaft und Eltern-Kind-Beziehungen wurden als zwei Arten von Beziehungen ausgewählt, die im Prozess der Entwicklung und Sozialisation wichtig sind und in denen die Bedeutung von Verpflichtung und Verantwortung erlernt wird. Die Kontexte westlicher und asiatischer Kultur stellen sehr unterschiedliche kulturelle Bedingungen für die Entwicklung und Sozialisation des Verständnisses von Verpflichtung und Verantwortung in menschlichen Beziehungen dar. Ein entwicklungspsychologischer Rahmen, in dem Personen beider Kulturen zu verschiedenen Zeiten ihrer Entwicklung miteinander verglichen werden, ist besonders geeignet, um zu untersuchen, ob Ähnlichkeiten oder Unterschiede zwischen Kulturen von der Kindheit bis zur Adoleszenz beständig sind oder variieren. Im Folgenden werden wir zunächst theoretische Aspekte dieser Untersuchung behandeln und anschließend Fragen unserer empirischen Untersuchung ableiten.
