In Europa sind im 20. Jahrhundert 80 Millionen Menschen vom Schicksal ethnischer Säuberungen, Zwangsmigrationen u.Ä. Völkerverschiebungen betroffen worden. Der polnische Historiker (Uni Stettin, Gastprofessor in Halle und Mainz) begnügt sich nicht mit einer quellenreichen wissenschaftlichen Darstellung von Massenvertreibungen seit den Balkankriegen, von Abschiebungen und Deportationen in der Zwischenkriegs- und Flüchtlingsströmen in der Nachkriegszeit. Von letzteren war auch seine Familie betroffen. Neben Zahlen und Fakten verfolgt er auch Einzelschicksale und verdeutlicht damit das millionenfache Leid der Verjagten. Aufrechnungen und Schulddebatten sind nicht sein Thema, vielmehr lenkt er den Blick auf das gegenwärtige Europa, in das immer mehr außereuropäische Migranten einströmen und (meist) vor verschlossenen Türen stehen, als sei hier die kollektive Erfahrung erzwungener Flucht und neuen Anfangs völlig unbekannt. Mit seiner Forderung nach einer gemeinsamen Erinnerungskultur statt Vertriebenenstreitigkeiten könnte Piskorski Debatten anstoßen. Mit Fotos, Personen- und Ortsregister, Bibliografie.
