Erich Ludendorff (1865 - 1937) war eine der Schlüsselfiguren in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts: Als gefeierter Generalissimus des Ersten Weltkriegs und Erfinder des "totalen Kriegs", als Ikone der völkischen Bewegung und ideologischer Wegbereiter des Nationalsozialismus. Kein anderer deutscher Militär hat eine Machtfülle besessen wie General Ludendorff im Ersten Weltkrieg. Das Kriegsrecht ermöglichte ihm die Einflussnahme auf alle Bereiche des öffentlichen Lebens, auf Wirtschaft, Propaganda und Besatzungspolitik. Sein innenpolitisches Ziel für die Zeit nach dem "Endsieg" war eine Militärdiktatur. In der Außenpolitik träumte er von einem "Imperium Germaniae", seine völkischen Motive verband er - lange vor den verbrecherischen Plänen der Nationalsozialisten - mit der radikalen Vorstellung eines "totalen Kriegs".
