Die Religionswissenschaftlerin geht der aktuellen Frage nach, inwieweit Religion tatsächlich oder vermeintlich für die anhaltende Gewalt in der Welt (mit-)verantwortlich ist. Die (nicht neue) Erkenntnis, dass auch die Nationalstaaten und die säkularen Staaten der Neuzeit ebenfalls keine Garanten für Frieden waren und sind, führt sie letztendlich zu dem Schluss, dass generell ideologisch motivierte Politik in Gewalt mündet. Sie plädiert daher dafür, den Blick erneut auf die friedensstiftenden Traditionen der Religionen zu lenken. Gewohnt ausführlich und detailreich bietet sie somit einen Beitrag zur gegenwärtigen Diskussion, der intellektuell anspruchsvolle Leser interessieren dürfte. - Wo Armstrongs bisherige Werke nachgefragt wurden, empfiehlt sich auch die Anschaffung dieses mit ausführlichem Anhang (Bibliografie, Register) ausgestatteten Buchs.
