Content: This study investigates a distinctive characteristic of Dionysus, his "epiphany," and shows how it gradually became separated from myth and, after 1800, became a sign of Romantic-Modern literature and philosophy. Through Hölderlin's Dionysian moment, Nietzsche's Dionysian aesthetic, and the mythopoetic metaphor of the Dionysian for poets such as Pound, Eliot, Rilke, and Valéry, the modern concept of the Dionysian took form and became a central concept in art and literary theory. A discussion of Dionysian discourse in the works of Martin Heidegger and Jean-François Lyotard is also included
