Die Chefankläger der vier Siegermächte haben zu Beginn und am Ende des Nürnberger Prozesses große programmatische Reden gehalten, in denen sie ihre rechtsphilosophischen Ansichten, ihre Sicht auf die Verbrechen des Nationalsozialismus und ihre Zukunftsvisionen für ein internationales Strafrecht für Verbrechen gegen den Frieden und gegen die Menschheit deutlich machten. Von diesen Reden ist diejenige des amerikanischen Anklägers Robert H. Jackson als einzige ins Bewusstsein einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit gelangt. Die Reden des britischen Anklägers Hartley Shawcross, der französischen Ankläger François de Menthon und Auguste Champetier de Ribes sowie des sowjetischen Anklägers R. A. Rudenko, sind hingegen so gut wie unbekannt geblieben. Zu Unrecht , denn in ihnen finden sich ebenfalls Gedankengänge, die für den Umgang mit der NS-Vergangenheit in den jeweiligen Ländern und weltweit bedeutsam waren, aber auch zukunftsweisend für die nationale und internationale juristische Behandlung von Staatsverbrechen. Von den vier Eröffnungsreden und den vier Schlussplädoyers werden hier je eine Rede der vier Mächte nachgedruckt und mit kommentierenden Essays begleitet. Diese Essays beleuchten zum einen historisch-kritisch die Argumentationslinien der Reden aus ihren - durchaus unterschiedlichen Rechtsverständnissen und zum andern verdeutlichen sie die Elemente, die im Sinne der Nürnberger Prinzipien zukunftsweisend und wirksam waren
