Der Krieg war jahrtausendelang eine reine Männersache, Frauen nur am Rande beteiligt, als Krankenschwestern etwa oder in der Rüstungsindustrie. Dies änderte sich im Zweiten Weltkrieg, als die amerikanischen Streitkräfte die ersten Reporterinnen akkreditieren und Frauen an vorderster Front über das Kriegsgeschehen berichteten. Denn auch an der Heimatfront sollten Frauen für die Kriegsanstrengungen gewonnen werden. So kam es, dass in Hochglanzmagazinen oder Frauenmagazinen wie Vogue neben Modestrecken illustrierte Reportagen über das Kriegsgeschehen, ja sogar die Befreiung des Konzentrationslagers Buchenwald abgedruckt wurden. Kanonenhagel über Moskau, Bomberangriffe gegen Rommels Einheiten in Tunesien, der Vormarsch der Alliierten in Italien, der D-Day und die Befreiung des KZ Buchenwald, die Kapitulation der Deutschen: Im Zweiten Weltkrieg berichteten zum ersten Mal Frauen als akkreditierte Journalistinnen über den Krieg. Zu den bekanntesten zählten die drei Amerikanerinnen Lee Miller, Martha Gellhorn und Margaret Bourke-White, deren wichtigste Texte und Fotos, viele davon in Deutschland unbekannt, Elisabeth Bronfen zusammengestellt hat. In ihrem Nachwort zeigt sie auf, wie diese unerschrockenen Frauen durch ihre persönliche und unmittelbare Art den Blick auf den Krieg für immer verändert haben.
