Während andernorts Menschen für ihren Glauben morden, muss in Europa die Toleranzdiskussion seit der Aufklärung stetig aufs Neue geführt werden. Der interdisziplinär ausgerichtete Band lenkt den Blick auf das 18. Jahrhundert, in dem traditionelle und modernisierende Kräfte zum Teil erbittert um Glaubenswahrheiten und Toleranzräume rangen. Wesentliche Positionen der Debatte wirken bis in unsere Tage nach. Nicht nur Atheisten, sondern auch Andersgläubige, etwa Muslime, Angehörige von Naturreligionen oder Sekten, galten für viele Christen des 18. Jahrhunderts als „ungläubig“ – und sollten entweder bekehrt und missioniert oder aber verfolgt und bestraft werden. Befürworter eines toleranten Umgangs setzten sich dem Verdacht aus, selbst ungläubig zu sein. Die Rolle des „Ungläubigen“ markiert somit einen spannenden Ausschnitt der komplexen Beziehung zwischen Aufklärung, Theologie und Recht (nicht nur) im 18. Jahrhundert.
