Auf Vorwort und Einleitung folgt eine Kurzcharakterisierung der vier diskutierten Schriftsysteme des 2. Jt. sowie ein Abschnitt dazu, dass es sich um eine lautschriftliche Alphabetschrift und zugleich ein graphisches System kultureller Identität handele. Als nächstes wird das Gebiet von Serabit el-Chadim als kulturelle Kontaktzone samt Hathortempel und besonderer Vertragsszene vorgestellt. Der Hauptteil des Bandes widmet sich Thesen zur Genese der Alphabetschrift, darunter u. a. den Aspekten von Zweisprachigkeit, Sprachbestimmung, Bedeutung von Namen, Zeichenübernahme, Verhältnis Bild-Schrift, Varianz und Normierung von Zeichen, Buchstabennamen und Buchstabenreihenfolge. Die Untersuchung schliesst mit Abschnitten zu Archäologie und kultureller Wichtigkeit der Tempelwerkstatt von Serabit, dem Inschriftentableau am nahegelegenenen Gebel Lihyan mit hieroglyphischen und bildhaft-kanaanäischen Texten sowie Ausblick, Glossar und Literaturliste

Hieroglyphs and cuneiform are over 5000 years old; the first alphabet, Proto-Sinaitic, first originated around 2000 BC in southwestern Sinai, at Serabit el-Khadim, an area of conflict between Egyptians and Canaanites. The goal of this book is to trace the origin of written language and to examine Serabit el-Khadim, its point of origin. In doing so, this study aims to demonstrate the ways in which cultural contacts can work by stimulating language and culture. After a foreword and introduction, a brief characterization of four writing systems of the second millennium will be given, along with a section dealing with the way in which a phonetic alphabet can constitute a graphical system of cultural identity. Next, the area of Serabit el-Khadim is presented as a zone of cultural contact, together with the Temple of Hathor and other significant places. The main part of this book is devoted to theses on the origin of the written alphabet, including, among others, aspects of bilingualism, language determination, the meaning of names, the adoption of characters, the relationship between images and writing, the variance and normalization of characters, letter names and letter sequences. The investigation closes with sections on the archaeology and cultural significance of the temple workshop at Serabit, inscriptions from nearby Gebel Lihyan with hieroglyphic and pictorial Canaanite texts, and finally a conclusion and overview. The book also includes a glossary and bibliography
