Nicht nur das bedeutende kompositorische Werk Hanns Eislers (1898-1962), auch seine theoretisch-ästhetischen und kulturpolitischen Überlegungen, die produktive Wechselbeziehung der mehr als drei Jahrzehnte dauernden Arbeitsfreundschaft mit Bertolt Brecht sind in den letzten Jahren zunehmend erschlossen worden. Sie gehören zu den Bausteinen einer marxistisch-leninistischen Ästhetik und finden daher zu Recht zunehmend Interesse bei Literaturwissenschaftlern. Schebera geht in der vorliegenden Arbeit detailliert Eislers Wirken während des amerikanischen Exils nach und erhellt damit praktische Erfahrungen und Bedingungen seiner Theoriebildung. Im Dokumentenanhang erscheint in deutscher Sprache erstmalig vollständig der Text des Verhörs vor dem berüchtigten "Ausschuß zur Untersuchung unamerikanischer Tätigkeit".
