Content: Liechtenstein forms an integral part of the Swiss customs territory. Traditionally close ties between the two neighbours, including a monetary union, have resulted in the application of common regimes towards third countries in many areas. However, this basic relationship needed to be reviewed when Liechtenstein decided to join the European Economic Area (EEA). This article analyses the main problems by bringing into perspective some of the key differences between the Swiss-EU and EEA regimes relating to the free movement of goods. Major results of the negotiations between Liechtenstein, Switzerland and the EU include: 1) Liechtenstein's creation of a customs office and a market control and surveillance mechanism for goods subjected to different tariff and non-tariff regimes under the Swiss/EU and under the EEA agreements; 2) temporary derogation in areas where Liechtenstein's adjustment to EEA law would be too costly; 3) marketability in Liechtenstein of products meeting both Swiss and Liechtenstein standards.
