Content: Vrba, Rudolf: Die mißachtete Warnung : Betrachtungen über den Auschwitz-Bericht von 1944, in: Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte (München), 44 (Januar 1996) 1, S. 1-24
Content: In the January 1996 issue of the Vierteljahrshefte, Dr. Rudolf Vrba statet that, although Jewish representatives in Slovakia and Hungary had received the Auschwitz Report, they could not warn the Hungarian Jews in time. Fact is that the on record report did not reach Budapest until end of May or early June, too late to warn the victims being deported to Poland since May 14. General information on Auschwitz was circulated by Reszoe Kastner end of April or early May 1944. Attempts to warn Hungarian Jews living in the provinces by youth organisations affiliated with Kastner, however, were rejected. Kastner, virtually unknown, was not a member of the Jewish Council and, therefore, could hardly issue a warning. The Hungarian Jews had been receiving reports on the genocide in Poland since 1942, but disregarded these, since they saw no practical means of escaping. However understandable Dr. Vrba's accusations are, they must be repudiated based on the recent documentation we have received. (Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte / FUB)
