Chiefly as a reaction to the European Community and the North American Free Trade Agreement, but also to some extent due to a dynamic redistribution of geopolitical and economic power in the region. East Asia could become a third major actor on the intra- and inter-regional scenes in the coming decade. It is the contention of the authors that a de facto economic integration is strongly emerging in East Asia, but that several unclear scenarios of regional or sub-regional economic (if not political) groupings have to be considered.
