Content: Kaposi sarcoma (KS) emerged in 1981 from being a rare curiosity mainly affecting children in sub-Saharan Africa and elderly men in Eastern Europe. The epidemiology of KS in HIV+ and HIV- individuals proposed that an infectious agent, other than HIV-1, is involved in the pathogenesis of this tumor. In 1994, Chang and Moore (Columbia University, NYC), used representational difference analysis to identify sequences of a novel human herpesvirus (Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus, KSHV) in AIDS-related KS. Phylogenetically, the virus is closely related to herpesviruses in pan troglodytes and gorilla. Mole
