In der abgeschlossenen Welt der Okkupanten waren ihre wenigen Kontakte mit den Einheimischen oft von einseitiger Brutalität geprägt. Deshalb sucht das Buch vor allem nach Erklärungen für die Wahrnehmung und Legitimierung der Gewalt gegen Polen, Weißrussen und Juden.
