This study examines the earliest grammars of Portuguese from a variety of perspectives, including intention, target audiences, definition of grammar, views on language, and linguistic description (parts of speech and syntax). Of especial interest is the way the grammars relate to non-Portuguese source texts, notably the works of the Spanish grammarian Nebrija and the French »Grammaire générale«.
