Die Frage nach einer Funktion der grammatischen Kategorie Genus ist eine der umstrittensten der Linguistik. Die Arbeit geht unter sprachhistorischer Perspektive der Frage nach, inwieweit zwischen dem Wortbildungstyp der Suffigierung und Genus eine diachron etablierte und kerngrammatisch motivierte Beziehung besteht, die unter dem Aspekt nominaler Quantifikation (Zählbarkeit) gefasst werden kann. Demnach dient die suffixale Wortbildung des Neuhochdeutschen weniger der Transposition und Modifikation als vielmehr der Bereitstellung overt markierter, quantifizierter Substantive.

The function of the grammatical category of gender is one of the most controversial issues in linguistics. This study draws on perspectives in historical linguistics to inquire about the extent to which there is a diachronically established relationship motivated by core grammatical structure between gender and the type of word formation in suffixation that can be described in terms of nominal quantification (i.e. countability). According to this view, word formation by means of suffixes in New High German serves less for transposition and modification, and more for the creation of overtly marked, quantifiable nouns.
