Das Buch behandelt das Thema Willensfreiheit und Vorsehung aus Sicht vier verschiedener Autoren. Zunächst werden die philosophischen, nicht vom Kriterium des Bewusstseins abhängigen Willenskonzeptionen des Kirchenvaters Augustinus sowie des Neuplatonikers Proklos erörtert. Weder Providenz noch Prädestination sind deterministisch aufzufassen - eine Theodizee erscheint möglich. Ein weiterer Hauptteil zu Apuleius' Goldenem Esel weist die literarische Relevanz des Themas für das Werkganze nach, speziell für eine Lösung des sog. 'Bruchs' zwischen den ersten zehn Büchern und dem Isis-Buch. Abschließend wird dieselbe Thematik in John Miltons Paradise Lost untersucht.
