Zurecht wird das Mittelalter als eine von grundlegenden Integrationsprozessen gekennzeichnete Epoche betrachtet, das Papsttum spielte hierbei eine Schlüsselrolle. Analysiert werden die wechselhaften Beziehungen der Päpste zum unmittelbar an der Grenze zum muslimisch beherrschten Süden der Iberischen Halbinsel gelegenen Erzbistum Toledo als Fallstudie solcher päpstlich geprägter Integrationsprozesse im 12. Jahrhundert.
