Series Statement: Work and welfare in Europe
Content: Introduction 1. Welfare State Research and Varieties of Capitalism 2. Empirical Indicators and Existing Typologies 3. A Unified Typology of Capitalisms 4. How Complementarities Stabilise Three Capitalisms 5. Diversity's Source: Three Policy Styles, Three Capitalisms 6. What can a Unified Typology Explain? Summary and Conclusion
Content: This book combines the two most important typologies of capitalist diversity; Esping-Andersen's welfare regime typology and Hall and Soskice's 'Varieties of Capitalism' typology, into a unified typology of capitalist diversity. The author shows empircally that certain welfare states bundle together with certain production systems, This book combines the two most important typologies of capitalist diversity. This is possible because all countries with liberal market economies also have liberal welfare states; all countries that coordinate their economy either have a conservative or a social democratic welfare state. Building on this, this book shows how Hall and Soskice's 'Varieties of Capitalism' typology can be combined with Esping-Andersen's welfare regime typology. Drawing on a large dataset of empirical indicators, this book argues that similar historical cultural policy styles forged production systems and welfare arrangements that now follow similar logics within families of countries. It is possible to distinguish 'liberal', 'social democratically coordinated' and 'conservatively coordinated capitalism', because production systems and welfare states form a coherent whole, so that neither of the two aspects can be studied in isolation. Ultimately, this book shows how such a unified typology can explain trajectories of liberalization
Content: 'This remarkable book provides what scholars of both capitalism and welfare states have long been waiting for: a single unified typology that serves to bring together the literatures on the 'Varieties of Capitalism' and the 'Families of Welfare States.' In delineating three clusters of production and welfare regimes-liberal, conservatively coordinated, and social-democratically coordinated capitalism-this book provides a major contribution to both fields by demonstrating quantitatively, using a vast array of empirical data, and qualitatively, through case studies, how we can make sense of capitalist complementarities in all their diversity.' -Vivien A. Schmidt, Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration and Professor of International Relations and Political Science, Boston University, US 'Finally, this book has combined Esping-Andersen's seminal welfare regime typology and varieties of capitalism into one unified typology of capitalist diversity. And it has done so very skillfully, showing why welfare states and production systems are similar in groups of countries.' - Louis Chauvel, Professor of Sociology, University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg 'This book is a must-read for anyone trying to understand how varieties of capitalism and welfare regimes are connected.' - Helmut Voelzkow, Professor of Comparative Sociology, University of Osnabruck, Germany
