Der deutsch-baltische Schriftsteller Werner Bergengruen (1892-1964) zählt zu den prominentesten Repräsentanten der "Inneren Emigration". Seine nach 1933 in Deutschland erschienenen Werke markierten eine Kontrastposition zur herrschenden Ideologie, indem sie den weltanschaulichen Vorgaben der nationalsozialistischen Staatsführung ein an unanfechtbaren ethischen Normen orientiertes, christlich-humanistisch geprägtes Welt- und Menschenbild entgegensetzten. Bergengruens grundsätzlich regimekritische Einstellung manifestierte sich darüber hinaus vor allem in seinen seit 1940 verfassten autobiographischen Aufzeichnungen. Er hat an ihnen bis kurz vor seinem Tod gearbeitet, so dass sie eine Fülle auch retrospektiver, das Epochenjahr 1945 überschreitende Reflexionen zur Geschichte des Dritten Reiches aus der Perspektive dessen bieten, der die Diktatur Hitlers aus unmittelbarer Nähe in kritischer Distanz miterlebt hat.
