Walther Bensemann (1873–1934), Fußballpionier und Gründer der noch heute existierenden Sportzeitung Kicker, ist eine der bedeutendsten Persönlichkeiten der deutschen Fußballgeschichte. Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts gründete er die ersten Vereine in Süddeutschland und arrangierte die ersten grenzüberschreitenden Spiele. Gegen engstirnige Funktionäre im Deutschen Fußballbund focht der Kosmopolit während der Weimarer Zeit für die Idee, dass internationale Sportereignisse zur Verständigung und zur Friedenswahrung beitragen könnten. Das erzwungene Exil 1933 und sein früher Tod 1934 ließen eine Stimme verstummen, deren Ideale noch heute aktuell sind.
